“The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini is truly a masterpiece.  It is the first and only book that has brought me to tears.  The book is 371 pages, and I finished reading this in 3 days.  I recommend this book to anyone that appreciates great writing.  This book touches on friendship and loyalty, love, hope, despair, life long regrets, and redemption.  This story will resonate with you long after you are done.  I won’t ruin the plot for you, just go get it!

The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne

I’m reading this book called The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne.  This book focuses on the law of attraction, and how to apply this law to your own life so that you live a fulfilled one.  There was a lot of buzz going around about this book…Oprah raved about it, and it was on the New York Times bestseller list, so I felt compelled to check it out.  I appreciate it’s motivational and inspirational approach - i.e. “You can do and be anything you want to if you put your mind to it.”  I believe in the law of attraction.  We attract people and things in our life that are likewise, attracted to us.  As shallow as this may sound, I would have to say that generally, most attractive people choose to surround themselves with other people that are as attractive as them.  If you view yourself as an 8 on a scale of 1-10, and a guy that approaches you that you would rate a 7 or 8 asks if he can call you sometime, you are more likely to say “yes” to him rather than a guy that does not take care of his appearance, is overweight, and someone that you don’t trust knowing where you live, etc.  I agree wholeheartedly with this scenario.  We attract the people that we want in our lives and vice versa.

So what about the horrible things that happen in our life that we never ask for?  What about divorce, heartache, broken relationships?  This book fails to touch upon life’s pitfalls.  $*!t happens, now what?

As I mentioned before, I appreciate the optimism that this book offers, but is it really reality?  This book gathers the thoughts of prominent physicians, educators, philosophers, and entrepreneurs that have had success with The Secret and live by the law of attraction.  Metaphorically, the author tells us to use ourselves as a human transmitter or frequency, basically a magnet that will attract whatever it is that we are sensing.  If we transmit positive vibes, start thinking good thoughts, do random acts of kindness, and live our life with a “no problem attitude”, these feelings will find its way back to us.  Wishful thinking?  The author goes on to say that if we truly feel and believe that we are meant to live a rich life, we need to start acting like it.  If we want a job so badly, we need to start acting like the job has already been offered to us.

I think it is human nature to worry about things.  We all worry about the uncertain.  Will I get that promotion?  Will I be able to start my own business and stick with it for the long haul?  Will these people like me?  Even the most confident person has some insecurities, right?  It’s a great message - what this book is portraying.  But is it really REAL?  Can we get what we want if we start acting like it’s already ours and having a super positive outlook?

There was a time when I was so broke, I needed money before starting the school year up again.  I remember stressing about how I was going to pay for all these books!  Miraculously, I got a check in the mail either from a refund or from a relative (I can’t remember), and then I didn’t worry about how I was going to make it anymore.  Things always have a way of working themselves out, but is that the law of attraction, was it pure luck, or was it God’s grace?
